The road sign of the lamplight zone

The word "lamplight zone" has an impression of an after dark entertainment like a stall  bar with a red lantern.  However, its actual meaning seems to encourage people to give consideration to vulnerable road users.

Since the traditional design "Seigaiha (combination of characters of blue colour, the sea, and waves) was mentioned in the preceding article "What is rarely seen is", I made a further search for a more clear photo of Kamidai-bashi bridge.  I found a photo of its  balustrade.

f:id:Naimonowa:20160908083640j:plain

This photo shows a part of the bridge and the ancient Tokaido road in a direction opposite to that of the previous photo.  The design of "Seigaiha" and a more straight-lined design (I intend to find out its name later) at low-height portions at both ends of the  bridge are photographed.  I'm impressed by the originality and the good sense of the traditional design.

As mentioned above, the up-climbing slope in the photo is a part of the ancient Tokaido road. I plan to visit a historical point on the road where I heard that explanation plates and the like are placed.

By making a left-hand turn at a corner directly past the bridge (very slightly shown in the photo) , it is possible to reach an area around Tanmach station (the first station past Yokohama station when riding in a local train bound for Shibuya or a farther terminal of Fukutoshin line, Seibu line or Tobu line) of Toyoko line after advancing along the road, passing thourgh the cornars at Sawatari and Izumi-cho crossings.

The platforms of Tanmachi station of Toyoko line are now under-ground.  The underground installation was completed in 2004 when Minato-mirai line started its operations.  Recently, the foundation of a footbrige remained in front of the station has been removed.  Before, there were rather strong signs like "Those who do not use the train are prohibited to enter into the area of the station." When I followed directions, there would have appeared a situation like "Oyashirazu Koshirazu (a well known dangerous hill-like coast of Niigata, very much exagerated probably) :-).

This photo shows a shopping arcade located at tens of meters east of Tanmachi station, in which Kameya restaurant is in the central parts of the arcade.  Unlike its name "restaurant", there is not any entrance nor tables and chairs behind the counter that  are sometimes visible from the street in usual cases.  Papers on which the name of dish is written are placed around the counter, but it appeared to need a courage to be a custermer.

The reality, which I learned later, is that this restaurant was opened in the year of 2012 and  has a friendly atmosphare.  I also learned that In the day time, this place is used by another restaurant: Wada restaurant in which you can buy a take-out lunch box.

In the year end of 2015, I happened to pass by in front of this restaurant where a group of many "you"s (in the expression of a famous TV program) and local people (I guess) enjoying music with guitar accompaniment.  I felt like accidentally being there as a result of a time slipping.

The street which runs  on the side of Tanmachi station and directly behind the point where I took the photo shown above is National Road 1.

When going along National Road 1 past Tanmachi station for a while, there will be a crossing (Hirodai ohta) near to a fire station and a complex buildings of municipal offices of Kanagawa prefecture.   There is a building of a market chain "Big Yosan"  on the opposite side of the crossing.  I learned that there was a station of Toyoko line named "Shin Ohta machi" long time ago.

After making a left-hand turn at this crossing to enter a road which passes through "Hirakawa-cho" to reach Nishi-Kanagawa 3 chome, neat to the end of a long and mild upslope, there exist a shop of daily goods named  "Kato Shoten."   Probably because of the age, the facade of the shop makes me  somewhat nostalgic.

If there is a suitable occasion, I would like to buy goods in this shop.  I get the feeling that the sense of security prevailed in the society when the people were not able to buy things without talking to a person in the shop.

Behind the trees in this photo, there was an appartment house on a lot  near  to "Nishi-san shopping street" (short name of Nishi Kanagawa 3 chome shopping street that directly connects to "Rokkaku-bashi (literally meaing a hexagonal bridge) shopping street).  There are steep stairs on the left-hand side of the parking space.  The pair of the windows of the apartment house looked like eyes in the human face, and reminded me of the animation film "My Neighbor Totoro."  Unfortunately, this appartment house has been destructed recently.  A hopeful point is that the trees remain as before.

To be continued.

The politeness of traffic control personnels

Recently, I have chances to pass by various roads more frequently than before.  As I recall, there often were road sections where the one-side alternate traffic was forced by a road work or a cargo handling.

In almost every case, traffic control personnels are working in such a road section.   Mostly, men in a uniform and wearing a helmet are working.  But there also are cases  an woman does the same work.

It is a considerably hard work because the personel cannot leave the section in charge even under the blazing sun or at the time of a sudden shower.

f:id:Naimonowa:20160907080218j:plain

Generally, there is no need to talk to the personel.  But, bicycles may sometimes exceptionally pass the section even when the road is closed.  So I usually ask the personel about such a possibility.

In such cases, I was always impressed by the courtesy of his or her answering.

I think that the high consciousness of people playing his or her role in the working site leads to our living ease.

The personel in the photo willingly gave me his permision of taking a picture.

Removal of the BIOS chip, in practice

Though I made up my mind to remove the BIOS chip, at first I had no idea as to what should have been done to start the process.

I put the pieces of a heat-resisting tape around the target chip, and placed a short piece of  stranded wire of copper, which I found in my tool box, after forming it into a square shape, on the eight pins of the chip, as a special aid.

f:id:Naimonowa:20160905135720j:plain

I did not imagine such a scheme would have lead to a disasterous result described below.

f:id:Naimonowa:20160905135817j:plain

As can be readily recognized by the curvature of the heat-resisting tape, a large mass of solder remained on the surface of mother borad from which the chip has been removed after a long and hard struggle.  Of course, a solder absorption tape (a flat stranded wire of copper) was prepared  beforehand, but my heart was  nearly panicked when fighting against the solder mass which had determined to never gives up.

When analysing later, I noticed that an insufficient power of the soldering iron and an excessive pouring of the tip of the solder ignoring the heat adsorption nature of the mother board were the main reasons of the failure.

f:id:Naimonowa:20160905140659j:plain

The appearance of the chip was also quite tragic. I was not sure whether the chip was alive or not.

f:id:Naimonowa:20160905140757j:plain

After all, I was able to remove the solder mass, but a part of the surface of the mother board (in the lower-left part of the position of the chip) was scraped off.

To make the matter worst (appeared fatal) ,  a land portion (an electrode  like portion for the wiring) at the lower-right part dropped off when I was fiddling with it, feeling that it was  wobbling slightly.  What remained was a tip of the conductor line having a width near to the diameter of a human hair.

I was in a helpless mood, and felt very tired.

Puppy Linux version japonaise

This OS has a great advantage that the command line insturctions (using the keyboard) often required in other Linux OSs  are rarely necessary.  Thanks to this, the burden to the users is made very low.

A variety of application softs are previously included as default applications. Switching between the key entry of Japanese characters and the key entry of alphabet is performed by pressing the ctrl key and the space key simultaneously.  The conversion from Japanese hiragana characters to Japanese kanji characters can also be performed easily by pressing the space key.  Importantly, the connection to the internet can be proceeded in an interactive format using suitable ones of the default tools.

The total impression of it's use is very presant, thanks to the polite way of the expression  of the OS's messages, without any coercive language.

Puppy linux was developed by Barry Kauler of Australlia and opened for the public use in the year of 2003, and the great number of users exist worldwide. The development of the Japanese versions is eagerly performed, and the described materials and the down load sites can be found in the following sites, for example.

Shortly, the road passes through Aratamabashi bridge, and the photo shown above was taken on that bridge.  A high-rise building of a Hotel near to the  west exit of Yokohama station is seen at the center of the photo.

The first bridge was made in the year of Ansei 6 (1859) at the time of the opening of Yokohama port.  The name of the bridge was determined by picking up a few of characters representing the newly developped Okano rice field and Sengenshita  crossing, respectively (Ara is another way of reading of the character "new", Ta means rice field, and Ma is another way of reading of the character  "Gen" used in Sengenshita).  I was slightly disappointed to know this relatively easy origin of the bridge's name.

Rewriting of the BIOS Chip
The notebook computer (Toshiba Dynabook CX/45E made in the year 2008) which I bought at a certain used PC shop in Akihabara (one of my favorite shops, and I was able to bring other PCs  bought from the shop to a usable state relatively easily)  without any operating system at a very low price gradually became unstable, and finally refused to show any tangible signs.  It appeared that such a difficulty was resulted by a hardware problem or a corrupted BIOS, after a series of checks made in accordance with the guidance found at the Toshiba's site.

To renew the BIOS, it is general to execute a renewal sequence including a new BIOS stored in a diskette or the like.  However, no measure can be taken when the hardware does not start up.

Because of the hesitation to a minute repairing procedure, I allowed the notebook PC to keep its unworkable state for about six months. But of course such a unworking state bothered me,  and one day I decided to disassemble the housing of the PC to visually check the mother board.

f:id:Naimonowa:20160901210048j:plain

The photo shows a side of the mother board reverse to its upper side facing the keyboard unit. It seemed that the BIOS chip is arranged at somewhere on this side. (For purposes of precaution, an alminum foil was spread under the mother board, a spray of water mist was also done to prevent an electrostatic discharge.)

For more information about the details of the disassembly, please check other suitatable sites.  It would be advisable to keep various secrews in groups according to their types, diameters, and lengths and to memorize their numbers.  Additionally the connectors should be disconnected in proper steps and also in a proper direction.

f:id:Naimonowa:20160901211928j:plain

I made an estimation that the 8-pin chip marked with an orange color paint  mounted at a portion of the mother board (the upper photo) shown in its enlarged view (the lower photo) stores the BIOS. Then I have confirmed its correctness through checking of the specifications from the chip maker using the model number.

I thought over as to if there would be any possibility of successfuly rewriting the BIOS stored in this chip without removing it from the mother board, using a purpose-built clip. However it seemed to be difficult after reviewing further information  on the internet, and I made up my mind to remove the chip from the mother board.
